Michael Ciavarella in collaboration with Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre
Reflection – an installation of floating mirrored steps – subverts the order of water and sky, prompting us to re-examine our place within the environment. The artist proposes that the interaction of a man-made structure in the natural landscape holds the potential for the viewer to witness the changing installation, and by extension, become increasingly aware of our need to collaborate with the environment in order to overcome the climate crisis facing the world.
While Reflection’s extension into Lake Cootharaba is in constant flux, four anchor points at its extremities impose a tension and arrest its movements against the natural flow of the body of water. Ciavarella says that these fixed points might be read as reminders that humanity’s impact on the environment is imminent but can be thoughtfully integrated into the steps towards a solution. The anchor points are solid anchors, like scientific facts regarding climate change, directing our path towards a solution.
