Found Escaping

Boreen Point

28 June to 27 July 2025

Quite a few people seem to believe there was once a man who could walk on water. They say he was ‘above the laws of nature.’

Miracle or metaphor?

Believe it or not (this next bit – not the whole walking on water thing – I’m kind of assuming that if you’re already on board with a contemporary art event that champions science-based understandings of climate and environment, we’re probably on the same page there), it depends on who you ask.1

The BooCrew Artist Collective, however, has come up with a third option. Barely beneath the lake’s surface (a nod to a future of rising sea levels enveloping all sorts of infrastructure), their bamboo platform projects out into Lake Cootharaba, enabling would-be prophets to ‘walk on water.’ And even if you don’t have a Messiah complex, The BooCrew’s submerged pier proposes a momentary escape from reality – a short but seemingly impossible journey – free from the world’s usual restraints. They have created a space to experience and imagine different possibilities.

Extending the work on two occasions across the Floating Land artistic program, a large hemispherical screen will settle on the water’s surface, sitting like a portal off the end of the pier. Using projection mapping, the surface will come to life with creative visions – past and future.

1 They say that around 31.6% of the world’s population subscribes to the belief system that this story hails from. And in the United States alone, around 20% of all adults believe that the stories from this belief system are LITERALLY true. But that’s just what Google AI tells me – you can do your own research (not in that way!).

ARTIST BIO

The BooCrew Artist Collective has been working with bamboo for over 15 years. Harvesting from clumps requiring maintenance within South-East Queensland, their work embraces natural and reusable materials, leaving no trace once installations have been dismantled and disseminated into different lives.

The BooCrew Artist Collective includes Tim Davies, Ian Davies, Steph Zannakis and Mark Wilson.

A floating bamboo platform becomes a screen at night, showing dreamlike projections that invite escape, imagination, and thoughts about tomorrow.
