Future Nature

Simone Eisler with Wicked Interactive Storytelling

Simone Eisler gives us an augmented reality experience that sees a sculptural installation continue to bloom around the viewer with species that have fled the sea below due to the effects of climate change. This delicate and sensitive installation is an extension of Eisler’s previous work in which she explores the evolution and transformation of animal and plant species as a result of humanity’s impact on the environment. Climbing and clinging to the trucks of trees perched high above Little Cove, a shift has occurred between the marine and the terrestrial, the transmogrification is amplified when viewed through an experiencing enhancing app that can be downloaded via the QR code supplied.

Simone Eisler’s work explores, across human, animal and plant worlds, concepts of physical transformation, species evolution and adaption and the imminent threat imposed by climate change. Her work draws from myth, fairy-tale, history and ecology. Eisler’s imaginary sculptural forms rework animal, plant and fabricated materials, and forms. These new forms are re-skinned, cast, fractured, reconfigured, and placed together en masse to create sensory gardens or incursions into the landscape. Her work is rich, organic, sensual, at times sexual, bold in form and yet powerfully decorative. In addition to her large-scale installations, she produces photographic works drawn from her own physical interaction with and interception into these installations. She also plays with presentation methodologies drawn from museological practice and new technology. As an artist interested in the ‘expanded field’ of sculpture her work is site-specific, in both the gallery and nature.

Simone has exhibited her work in the Philippines, Indonesia, New York, Belgium, Paris, Berlin, India and extensively within Australia. She has held over 10 solo exhibitions at commercial galleries in Brisbane and Melbourne since 2008. Her large-scale outdoor installation Museum of our Lost World featured in Botanica 2021 in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, and she has participated in major shows at the Museum of Brisbane, QUT Art Museum, Queensland Museum, and the State Library of Queensland in recent years. She has an extensive public art practice with many major commissions in Queensland. She provides workshops in schools across Queensland and from her studio in Kin Kin.
